Investing in Argentina
The regulator to check, the instruments actually available, and the tax basics for building an investment plan in Argentina.
The regulator to know
CNV (Comisión Nacional de Valores)
The CNV regulates Argentina's securities markets and licensed brokers (sociedades de bolsa). Check that any platform is CNV-registered — Argentina's history of currency and capital controls has also made it a target-rich environment for informal, unregulated investment schemes.
Common instruments for a first-time investor
CEDEARs
Argentine certificates representing shares of foreign companies (Apple, Amazon, and hundreds of others), tradeable in pesos on the local exchange. For most Argentine retail investors, this is the standard way to get dollar-linked, foreign-company exposure without an offshore brokerage account.
Plazo fijo UVA
A term deposit indexed to inflation (UVA), designed to at least preserve purchasing power in an economy where standard peso savings accounts historically have not.
Bonos dollar-linked
Argentine government or corporate bonds denominated or adjusted in dollars — a common way to hold peso-based savings with reduced exposure to devaluation.
Tax basics
Argentine tax rules on investment income have changed frequently along with broader economic policy — including periods with and without taxes on certain dollar assets and stock gains. Treat any specific rate as provisional and confirm current treatment with an Argentine accountant before you file, not before you invest.
If money needs to cross a border
Argentina's currency controls (the cepo) have historically restricted how much and how easily individuals can convert pesos to dollars — substantially eased under the current reform program, but worth verifying the current rules before assuming free convertibility. CEDEARs and dollar-linked bonds exist partly because they let Argentines get dollar exposure without triggering those restrictions.
First steps
Open an account with a CNV-registered sociedad de bolsa — several now onboard fully online.
Decide your peso-vs-dollar split before choosing instruments — this matters more in Argentina than almost anywhere else in the region.
If holding pesos short-term, compare a plazo fijo UVA against a standard one before parking cash.
